Members of the Jefferson County BOE stand with the inaugural Beacon Award winners on a stage at the May 27 BOE meeting

The Board of Education Beacon Award is a newly established honor presented annually by the Jefferson County Schools Board of Education to individuals who exemplify outstanding service, leadership, and commitment to the students, staff, and greater Jefferson County community.

The name Beacon is rooted in the history of Jefferson County Schools. It was first the name of the yearbook at Page-Jackson High School, the high school for Black students in the county during segregation. In that context, The Beacon represented resilience, achievement, and hope. Today, that legacy continues through The Beacon, Jefferson County Schools’ community newsletter—both publications are symbols of connection and unity.

In this inaugural year, each member of the Board of Education selected one individual to receive the Beacon Award, honoring a diverse group of leaders who reflect the values of service, equity, and dedication to education. The inaugural recipients were recognized at the May 27 BOE meeting. This year’s recipients include:

  • Dr. Lee Ebersole, Jefferson County Schools Director of Social Emotional Support, a champion for student well-being and a steady presence through uncertainty

  • Rachel Allen, a talented music teacher who inspires creativity and connection through the arts

  • Judy York, a passionate volunteer and advocate for the JCS School Excess Levy

  • Senator Amy Grady, a teacher and state senator, who has ensured our students receive education in personal finance

  • Theo Yates, a dedicated community coach who uplifts students on and off the field

Together, these five honorees represent the many ways individuals across our community contribute to the success of Jefferson County Schools. Each one serves as a beacon—a guiding light—whose actions help illuminate a brighter path for students, educators, and families.

The Board of Education is proud to launch the Beacon Award with this remarkable group of inaugural recipients and looks forward to continuing this tradition of recognition for years to come.
